Build Or Bash
By: Malky Wolf
“Your freckles are disgusting.” “I don’t want anyone seeing my nerdy sister.” “You’re so stupid!”
Ever hear words in your home that make you freeze inside?
I did. One of my children—with a slightly lower self esteem—had started using words that really hurt her younger siblings. My first instinct was: STOP THIS NOW.
But something bothered me. I shouldn't break her more. And besides, children aren’t robots. The “Kind words only” rule sounds nice… but people get frustrated. Angry. Overwhelmed.
And there’s a big difference between: 🟡 Words that express feelings and 🔴 Words that attack people. But how do you explain that difference to children?
So I turned it into a game. I made three categories: 🟢 Green — words that build 🔴Red — words that break 🟡 Yellow — words that express frustration
Then I wrote real-life comments on cards, and the kids had to decide which category each one belonged to. It was a sneaky way to make them aware of what their words do. Suddenly, they were thinking. Even my six-year-old quickly caught on!
Later that day, I overheard one child start to say something hurtful… then stop. Someone whispered, “Red.” That's when I realized that something changed in our home. There is respect. Safety. Awareness.
We’re not perfect. But we do not cross reds. Anyway, we try.

Homework |

With the weather finally nice, routines get tricky… Do your kids do homework before playing, later in the evening, or in the morning rush? |
|

“
Once the weather gets nice, homework becomes much harder to enforce. We do a quick snack and outside break first, but homework has to be finished before supper, or it drags on forever. -R.S
I made a rule "Ices After Homework" although my kids don't love it, it makes homework happen without leaving it for early morning or late evening, 'cuz they want their ices.
-Malky K.
With younger kids, homework gets done as soon as they come home. I try to have a snack prepared (fruits, cookies, smoothie) to munch on while doing homework. Because if it doesn’t get done right away, it just doesn’t happen. Once they get older, I stay out of it. -Gitty Luria
I wish I could implement a rule to do it homework before heading out to play. It usually ends up happening waaay after bedtime or in the morning...
-Goldy Friedman
My son's OT told me kids very often come home from school hangry (hungry + angry) and they need some downtime to eat, stretch and play before homework. -Tzippy Stein
Thankfully, my kids own their homework responsibilities by now, although that usually means they sit down to do it when I’d rather have them in the shower.
-Mimi P.

Fingerprint Flower Garden
If you need a quick pre-Shavuos activity that’s equal parts cute and low-stress, fingerprint flowers are hard to beat.
This simple flower craft is easy for even very young kids — and somehow always comes out adorable.
You’ll need:
How to make it:
- Pour small amounts of paint onto a plate or tray, or use colorful stamp pads for easier cleanup.
- Dip fingertips into the paint or ink and press several fingerprints in a circle to create flower petals.
- Repeat with different colors to fill the page with flowers.
- Let the paint or ink dry completely.
- Draw stems, leaves, and little details with marker.
Challenge your kids to get creative — what other pictures or scenes can they make using only fingerprints? Butterflies, balloons, animals, even whole gardens can start with a single thumbprint.
